What polyvagal theory helps us understand
Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr Stephen Porges, gives us a way to understand nervous system states in children. Rather than seeing difficult behaviour as intentional or defiant, it helps us recognise it as the body's way of trying to protect itself.
The theory describes three states the nervous system moves between. When a child feels safe, they're available for connection, play, learning and problem-solving. When they feel threatened or overloaded, they may shift into fight or flight. When they're overwhelmed beyond that, they may shut down — freeze, withdraw or collapse. These aren't choices. They're nervous system responses, and knowing which state a child is in tells us what they actually need in that moment, rather than what we wish they'd do.
Why children can't always think their way into regulation
When a child is in fight, flight or shutdown, the thinking and language parts of the brain are harder to access. Words, reasoning, explanations and instructions may not reach them first — not because they're choosing to ignore you, but because their nervous system has moved into a state where those channels are genuinely less available. Some children need support through the body before they can use words, listen, or reflect on what happened.
It changes the question from "why won't they just listen?" to "what does their nervous system need right now to feel safe enough to receive me?"

What Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen's work adds
Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen's Body-Mind Centering approach offers something important: a reminder that the body and mind aren't separate in child development. Children learn through the body. They make sense of the world through movement, touch, breath and physical experience long before they can put it into words. The developmental movement patterns of early childhood — rolling, crawling, pushing, reaching, rocking — aren't just milestones. They're how children begin to organise themselves, relate to the world, and feel their own body.
Polyvagal Theory gives us a map of the nervous system states. Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen's work helps us think practically about how to work with a child's body in those states — what kinds of movement, touch, rhythm and relationship may give the nervous system cues of safety.
Movement is not just exercise
When we talk about movement and regulation, we don't mean burning off energy. Movement — particularly slow, rhythmical, grounded movement — is one of the ways children organise themselves. Crawling, rolling, pushing against resistance, rocking, carrying, climbing give the nervous system information about where the body is in space, and can help it settle.
This is different from high-energy, fast, chaotic movement. A child already in fight or flight doesn't usually settle from more stimulation — they settle from rhythmic, contained, grounded movement that gives a sense of organisation rather than escalation. A child who's shut down may need something even slower: gentle invitation, warmth, proximity, and patient waiting. The movement here is barely movement at all. It might be lying on the floor together, following their cues, being present without demands. It's why the same activity can settle one child and overwhelm another — exactly what the panel at the top lets you feel.
Touch, voice and rhythm as cues of safety
Children read the adult's nervous system through tone of voice, pace, facial expression, rhythm and movement — often before any words are exchanged. A soft, steady voice or rhythmical play can sometimes reach a child before language does. The child's nervous system is listening to the whole of the adult: not just the words, but the texture, pace and quality of everything around them.
Being near, unhurried, not withdrawing. The closest ring of safety.
A soft, slow tone. Humming. Fewer words. The adult's breath and pace are safety signals.
Rocking, clapping, singing routines, walking together. Shared rhythm helps the system settle.
Touch can be deeply regulating for some children and overwhelming for others. The key is always consent, cue-reading and the child's own enjoyment — pressure should never be forced. Some children regulate far better through a soft voice and proximity than through any physical touch.
Body-based regulation in everyday family life
The most effective regulation support usually doesn't come from a structured programme. It comes from small moments woven into the ordinary day — the way a parent sits beside a struggling child, the walk to school, the game of carrying the shopping, the few minutes of quiet floor play before dinner. At Seeds OT we try to find the regulation that already belongs to a family's life, rather than adding a separate list of tasks. The question is less about which activities to add and more about which moments in the existing day can become slightly slower, more connected, and more genuinely restorative.
Regulation as instruction
"Now do your regulation exercise." The child feels another demand, the system stays guarded, and it doesn't settle.
Regulation through play
The adult follows the child's lead. The child experiences connection, the nervous system receives safety, and the body settles on its own.
Connection before correction
When a child is in a protective state — anxious, overwhelmed, shut down or reactive — correction often lands as more threat. Raising your voice, repeating instructions, adding consequences or explaining why the behaviour was wrong can make the child less available, not more. Connection first doesn't mean there are no limits. It means helping the child's body feel safe enough to return to relationship, and then guiding behaviour from there, once the nervous system has settled enough to receive it. The limit can still be held — but how it's held matters as much as what it says.

How we support regulation through the body
At Seeds OT we don't see regulation as a script a child must memorise or a series of exercises they must perform. That means looking at the whole child — and working closely with parents, because a parent is the most powerful regulation resource a child has. Understanding your own child's cues, what shifts them toward safety and what tips them over, is often more useful than any individual strategy.

No. Touch and deep pressure can be regulating for some children and overwhelming for others. It should always be offered with the child's consent and enjoyment, never forced. Some children regulate better through proximity, a soft voice or shared movement than through touch. Always watch the child's cues carefully.
Safety in the body first
A child's nervous system doesn't settle through words alone. It settles through repeated experiences of safety in the body, in relationship and in the environment. When we understand behaviour through this lens, we can stop asking only "how do we make this behaviour stop?" and start asking "what helps this child feel safe enough to connect, move, play and participate?"
